A zine for you

Earlier this month, we brought the STORYTELLING WITH WORDS + PICTURES workshop to Yonkers Public Schools. 🖊️ 🎨 🗯️ A huge thank you to the Pearls PTA for sponsoring three back-to-back workshops and to third grade teacher Ms. Roca for coordinating the visit!

It’s thrilling to witness the magic of art-making unfold in the school classroom setting. The kids were focused, motivated, and proud of the stories they developed in our short time together!

In this workshop we:

  • warmed-up with an illustration exercise

  • looked at real zines — artist books, comics, and non-fiction mini-books made by kids and grown-ups

  • brainstormed ideas for an original story; and

  • used real artist tools to craft a short comic in the zine format, with publication in mind.

It was an honor to meet Mr. Apple the Office Worker, Sassy Plant, Nina & Andy (to the Rescue), The Caveman/Swordsman, Emily (Saver of Pandas), Super Kid, and their 2-dimensional “friends” yesterday. (It was even better to meet the storytellers who created these fantastic characters!)

Most of the students who take the STORYTELLING WITH WORDS + PICTURES are hooked on zine-making and want to continue the fun at home. Every child enrolled in the workshop leaves with a real zine starring the very naughty Newspaper Thief…
